 IMPREGNATED MOSQUITO NET from KlamboeMàn:

 PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST MALARIA,

AND HELP A FAMILY IN VIETNAM AT THE SAME TIME!

Malaria is a life-threatening risk in many tropical areas: both for the indigenous population and for the increasing numbers of Western tourists traveling there. Prophylactic medicines do not provide 100% protection anymore due to resistant parasites. Moreover, some people experience nasty side-effects to the medicines prescribed (like 'Lariam'). Therefore the prevention of mosquito bites by an impregnated bed-net is gaining importance as an additional measure.

Impregnation of a bed-net with a low dosage of the contact-insecticide 'Permethrin' improves its effectiveness greatly. Without it mosquitos can still bite through the net when an arm or leg touches the net. Or the mosquitos, hungry for blood, search the net to find even the smallest hole, which inevitably develop after some time. When the mosquitos touch an impregnated net they become disorientedand stop searching; when in contact too long they die. Permethrin is very safe for humans (and other mammals), but toxic for insects in low concentrations. It does not evaporate, but it is quickly broken down by sunlight (UV-rays) and soap (washing!). The nets are impregnated in the factory, which stays effective for six months of continuous use. But if the net is stored in a cool dark place it can last much longer. The net can be re-impregnated easily by yourself later - KlamboeMàn can advise you on this.

'KlamboeMàn' sells an impregnated mosquito-net (the 'Spider' - registered trademark from 'SiamDutch Mosquito Netting Ltd') which is especially attractive for travelers: it weighs only 450 gram and folds easily in a handy nylon bag (40 cm long, 15 cm diameter). It's a circular net, 2.50 m high and wide enough to cover a double bed (but can also be used for a single bed). It comes with a set of bamboo rods to spread it at the top so that it can be hung from a single point above the bed. It is made from knitted polyester and impregnated with the safest formula of 'Permethrin'.

'KlamboeMàn' is a private company, but legally bound to the non-profit NGO 'Medical Comittee Netherlands-Vietnam' (MCNV) to ensure that from every net sold a net will also be given to a family in Vietnam. MCNV implements a malaria control programme among the ethnic minorities in the 'central Highlands' in Vietnam: the provinces Gia Lai and Kon Tum, where malaria is the number I public health threat, but the population is too poor to buy mosquito nets for themselves.
